Editing and proofreading

I am an experienced copyeditor and proofreader, for print and online, working with charities, public sector and other organisations working for social good. From one-pagers to complex reports and large websites. If your content needs a second pair of eyes, I'd love to help.

Why work with me?

Over the last 20+ years I have worked on a huge range of topics including safeguarding, town planning, linguistics, theology and biblical studies, police and prison custody, probation, fire and rescue, literature, domestic abuse, environment and climate change, film and TV production, accountancy, online safety, supply logistics, philosophy, nutrition and international development.

Sometimes I have pre-existing knowledge about a subject, but I often work on topics that are new-to-me. I’ve always loved learning and I’m quick to pick up new subjects. I’m also skilled at transforming specialist or technical content into easy-to-understand and accessible copy.

What does this mean in practice?

Easy-to-understand doesn’t mean ‘dumbed down’. Plain language is about making content clear and concise, and making sure readers can quickly understand what they need to.

Everyone is busy. There are too many distractions and so many things competing for our attention. Plain language helps everyone understand. From the time-pressured expert who is quickly scanning an article, to the newly-qualified professional who is just starting out. Plus, plain language editing means there is no confusion in the copy, and your meaning is clear.

How can I help?

Examples of my editing and proofreading work include:

  • Copyediting long-form and often technical reports for the inspectorates for prisons, probation, constabulary, and fire and rescue services

  • Copyediting, proofreading and website content creation for the UK Civil Society Almanac 2024, providing an overview of the state of the voluntary sector

  • Proofreading brand guidelines for an international development charity

  • Content editing and development for a range of online and website content for charities and non-profit organisations

No editing or proofreading job is too small. If you need an experienced pair of eyes on your copy, whether for print or online, I’d love to help.

What will it cost?

Every edit is different. For copy-editing and proofreading I work to a day rate. How much time a project takes depends on the content length, complexity and how involved the edit or proofread needs to be.

I will provide a time and cost estimate for your project based on these details. Sometimes I can complete projects more quickly than anticipated. When this happens, I will reduce my invoice accordingly.

Want to upskill in-house?

I’d always recommend a second pair of eyes on content. But I’m also an advocate for upskilling and helping you create better content in-house. I have created and delivered plain language and writing for the web training for organisations including the NSPCC, SafeLives and HMICFRS. If this is of interest, I’d love to chat.

Victoria was really easy to work with. She was very accommodating and she was really helpful and gave useful suggestions. It was a painless process – thank you!
